Choosing a roofing contractor, or really any type of contractor, can be hard. You have those who don’t call you back, and those who do, but never show up for an appointment. So, what should you look for when choosing a roofing contractor for a roof repair or roof replacement? There are three essential elements to look at before signing a contract for any roofing service.
State Licensing
Every state has slightly different requirements for a roofing contractor. In Virginia, a roofer must pass not only the roofing contractor exam, but also the Virginia Contractor Class A, B, or C exam depending on the type of jobs they want to do. Insured & Bonded
Never hire a contractor of any sort who isn’t insured and bonded. It’s a bit more difficult to verify this, however, most contractors will show you their insurance certificate if you ask. And, any that are GAF Certified or GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractors or member of the Better Business Bureau have proven they carry insurance. Most who are insured are also bonded.
Experienced & Local
There are many experienced roofers who travel throughout the country following storm damage. Many of those are great contractors. However, we caution against hiring a storm chaser for many reasons. The first is that they may or may not carry all the proper state licensing. Second, they won’t be there in six months or a year if there is an installation issue. Finally, they often hire day workers who don’t have roofing experience that a local roofer’s employees have.
