Ready for Fall? Here’s Your Checklist

It must be fall, the kids are back in school and Christmas decorations are showing up in the store. Have you started your fall checklist? If you don’t have one, we’ve put together a simple task-list for you to follow to make sure your home is ready for the changing season. 

 Roof Cleaning

Did you know that debris on your roof hastens the deterioration of your shingles? If your roof has leaves, twigs or other debris, you want to remove it. Use a garden hose and spray it off or your blower to remove the items from your roof. Once it’s clean, make sure to look for signs that you need to call your roofing company for any repairs before winter.

 Gutter Cleaning

When you clean your roof, much of what you remove from it will end up in your gutters. If you haven’t cleaned your gutters since last fall, get a head start and clean them now. Don’t forget to clean them again after all the leaves have fallen. You don’t want water in your basement or under your foundation causing damage.

 Window Maintenance

Even if you have low maintenance windows, they need some attention. Before the weather really cools down, take a look at your screens and make sure they are all in good shape so you can open your windows for some fresh air. Also inspect the caulk on the inside and outside. You shouldn’t see any cracks, blisters, or peeling areas. If you do, it’s time to re-caulk to keep pests and water out and your heat in.

 Door Check

If your door doesn’t seal tightly, it’s leaking air. That means you’re spending more than you have to on heating and cooling costs. Good weather stripping properly seals your door. If yours has deteriorated, it’s easy to replace and new weather stripping can be found at any home improvement store.

 Siding

Your siding should be securely affixed to your home. If it’s loose, not only can water get underneath but so can small rodents. You shouldn’t see any holes or cracks in your siding. If you do, you may want to consider new siding.
